Embracing True Freedom: A Devotional on John 8:31-32
John 8:31-32 | English Standard Version
31 So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, 32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
As I prepared for this devotional, the word "free" echoed in my mind. Scripture is clear about Jesus offering a life of freedom to those who believe. Reflecting on instances where I found myself code-switching, I realized it stemmed from a lack of confidence in myself. Code-switching became a way to mold myself into someone I thought others would accept, leading me to prioritize pleasing others over pleasing Jesus. It was a journey of seeking acceptance from others while neglecting the unconditional acceptance from Him, flaws and all.
At the root of code-switching lay limiting beliefs that fueled a mindset of competition, comparison, and scarcity. While there are valid instances where code-switching may be necessary, such as acting as a translator, I'm addressing the posture of code-switching rooted in inadequacy and people-pleasing rather than serving a practical purpose.
When our hearts align more with cultural norms than with the principles of God's kingdom, we find ourselves code-switching. It's like rearranging the furniture in our hearts from a throne to a couch, an exhausting endeavor. So, where do we go from here? How do we break free from this relentless cycle of code-switching?
I urge you to start with a Fruit Examination (F): What fruit are you bearing? If it's not love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, and self-control, it's time to delve deeper into the Roots (R2). Replace them with an Eternal (E) mindset by immersing yourself in God's word, engaging in Biblical community, and worshiping God authentically, without restrictions. Be genuine in your relationship with Him.
Lastly, continue to Examine (E) your fruit and roots until your life's garden embodies the beauty and majesty of the Father. Remember, tending to the garden of your life requires constant care and attention.
